The clergy of the New Kingdom of Granada

A prosopographic database of Neogranadian priests and missionaries

Summary

This project combines relational databases and other tools to create a register of all priests active in the New Kingdom of Granada, initially up to the year 1700 and starting with those concerned with the evangelization of indigenous people. It brings together and makes available to researchers basic biographic data about each individual (places and takes of birth and death, offices held, documentation in which they feature, and other information, as available) drawing on a variety of sources and archives, relating it to information concerning other individuals in the database, and making possible analyses of networks and connections.

Achievements

  • We have compiled a database of 639 individuals mentioned in documents held in the Curas y Obispos fonds of the Colombian Archivo General de la Nación and other colombian archives.
  • We are working to incorporate these entries into the prosopographical analysis tools that we are developing.
